Newcastle upon Tyne, often shortened to Newcastle, is situated on the north bank of the River Tyne in the north-east of England. The city was founded in Roman times under the name Pons Aelius. On the northern outskirts of the city near Ponteland, is Newcastle International airport, flying to more than 80 destinations world-wide. The Tyne and Wear Metro extends as far as the airport.
